The Shrine Of Walsingham

As Bishop Alan Clarke, former Catholic bishop of East Anglia said, "There are not two shrines to Our Lady of Walsingham. There is only one shrine and that is Walsingham. But there are several centres of devotion.".

Catholic

During New Dawn week some of the normal activities of the Catholic Shrine are suspended. However Confessions and Mass at 12.00 noon continue as usual. The Slipper Chapel (left) and Holy Ghost Chapel are quiet places for prayer and are open as usual.

The Shrine also has a well stocked gift shop. There is also a cafe which serves meals as well as snacks (although you will need to book in advance during New Dawn week).

Anglican

The Anglican Shrine in the village is well worth a visit. Inside the shrine church is a replica of the original Holy House. The church itself has 15 chapels, one for each of the mysteries of the rosary. There are also the stations of the cross in the grounds. The Anglican Eucharist is offered in the shrine at 7.30 am and at 11.30 am in the All Souls chapel in the gardens. Each evening at 6pm shrine prayers are offered in the Holy House, these include written intercessions that are made by visitors to the shrine and sent in from all over the world. The Angelus bell is rung an 9.00 am, 12 noon and 6.00 pm and can be heard around the village.

HOLY WELL. There is also a holy well just inside the church entrance, where you can fill bottles from the water from the well. Either bring your own or buy a nice little bottles from the Shrine shop nearby. At 2.30 pm there is a short service of sprinkling at the well.

Orthodox

In recent years the Orthodox Church has opened a church in Great Walsingham. There is a small Orthodox Chapel in Little Walsingham, converted from the old railway station booking office.Othodox Chapel
